It looks like Apple’s wireless AirPods delay means they won’t be available for Christmas (AAPL)

AirPods, the wireless earbud headphones Apple launched alongside the headphone jack-less iPhone 7, won’t go on sale in 2016.

That’s according to MacRumors, which cites the Chinese-language Economic Daily Times writing about Inventec, an Apple supplier.

“Apple originally planned to release the AirPods at the end of October, but has postponed release. Inventec is expected to begin shipping AirPods in January 2017, the paper noted.”

While it’s a bummer for everyone who was hoping to find a pair of the cordless white earbuds underneath the Christmas tree, it’s probably a good thing for the product in the long run. The review unit provided by Apple that Business Insider tried has some glitches. Sometimes the audio cuts out, for example.

Apple originally said that AirPods would go on sale in “late October.” Last week, it provided a statement pushing the release date back for an undetermined time. Apple did not immediately return a request seeking clarification on when the AirPods will go on sale. When it initially announced the delay last week, Apple said:

“The early response to AirPods has been incredible. We don’t believe in shipping a product before it’s ready, and we need a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers.”

Here’s what AirPods look like in your ears:

The Cadillac CT6 has 5 tech features that set it apart from the competition (GM)

Cadillac CT6

Cadillac’s newest car, the CT6, is loaded with all kinds of high-tech features.

In fact, it’s the most technologically advanced car Cadillac has ever made. But after spending some time with the 2017 Cadillac CT6 Platinum, which is the most expensive trim level, we found five tech features that really set the CT6 apart from the rest of the competition.

A 360 degree recording system lets you to film everything around the car when parked for extra security.

The CT6 is decked out with a lot of cameras, seven exterior cameras to be exact. Those video cameras are used to support different safety and convenience functions, like lane keeping assist and night vision.

But CT6 owners can also use four of those cameras as a built-in surveillance system.

For example, when the car is armed, cameras located in the front grille, trunk lid, and on both of the side mirrors will automatically begin filming if someone tampers with the car. This gives the owner a 360 degree view of everything happening around the car and provides solid evidence if someone causes damage or tries to break into the vehicle.

The Cadillac CT6 is currently the only car on the market that has this surround vision taping feature, though, it’s only available on luxury trim levels of the car.

The cameras also enable a fully digital rear-view mirror that streams everything behind you in real-time.

The rear camera mirror streams what is happening behind you in real-time to give you an unobstructed view of what is around you.

No other luxury car maker currently has this feature. But GM will include it on the upcoming Chevy Bolt, which is slated to go into production this month.

A HDMI port in the rear lets passengers connect a Google Chrome stick or Roku so that they can stream their favorite content straight from their smartphone or tablet.

Tucked away inside the middle armrest you will find a small HDMI port where you can plug in just about any media streaming device.

This might seem like a small thing, but surprisingly most automakers don’t offer this kind of port in their vehicles. Most entertainment systems in the backseat simply play DVDs.

In the CT6, you can simply plug in a Google Chromecast, a Roku, Amazon Fire TV Stick or even an Apple TV into the HDMI port and stream Netflix, Hulu, Youtube or whatever else you want directly from your smartphone or tablet to the retractable media screens. A USB port is located right next to the HDMI port so you can keep your streaming device powered.

And because the CT6 supports 4G LTE connectivity, you don’t have to worry about long loading times. You can also play DVDs or content stored on a thumb drive on the media screen, but who does that anymore?

Tesla may have decided to get into the wrong roofing business (TSLA, SCTY)

Tesla Solar Roof

In decade of covering Tesla, I never honestly thought I would write the name of the company and “roofing” in the same sentence.

But now that Tesla is acquiring SolarCity, a solar-panel installer, and rolling out a rather lovely integrated solar roofing solution, the organization formerly known for creating futuristic electric cars is getting into a business that isn’t exactly top-of-mind when it comes to most consumers. Even if you own a home, you only think about your roof once a decade or so.

There are really two roofing businesses: residential and commercial. If you do a little light research, you quickly learn that the industry is fairly regional, and that most roofing companies with any notable revenue focus on one or the other.

The commercial side employs a lot more people and brings in more money. The residential side is comparably smaller, with companies in the top 100 for revenue sometimes staffing in the low two digits.

Remember Solyndra?

For what it’s worth, the last buzzy, innovative company in the solar space was ill-fated Solyndra, which captured a lot of attention in Silicon Valley for a revolutionary solar design, but which also went bankrupt in 2011 amid charges of favoritism from the Obama administration (those charges were debatable). And Solyndra’s focus was commercial rooftops: large-scale installations, bought by companies that could afford Solyndra’s product.

Elon Musk Solar City

SolarCity’s business is mainly residential, so it makes perfect sense that the merger with Tesla would seek to enhance that side of things through sort of “this changes everything” approach that Tesla has applied to cars.

But the thing is that the new solar roof concept is aimed at changing solar installation in residential applications in ways that might not ultimately makes much sense. No one with a decent roof is going to replace it with a solar roof, and when it comes time to actually do a full replacement, homeowners are confronted with a really big cost — $10,000 or more, and for a large house, a lot more.

A good deal?

Tesla argues that the new solar roof design will be both beautiful and less expensive than a regular old-school roof long term because of the offsetting energy cost savings. We can give Tesla and CEO Elon Musk the benefit of the doubt there, but it’s going to be rough going to get already financially shell-shocked homeowners to pony up for an even more expensive integrated solar roof when they can simply do the normal reshingling and throw in a limited number of solar panels, adding more late if they like the savings.

Big commercial installations is where the real action is, but SolarCity hasn’t penetrated that market, while ranking first in residential solar, according to Solar Power World. Alarmingly, it’s unclear whether there’s a clear way for SolarCity and Tesla to make a rapid-growth business, beyond current levels, out of residential solar. With 502 megawatts installed in 2014, SolarCity did almost five times the business of its closest competitor, Vivint Solar. After that, dozens of contractors chop up the remaining market share.

Bigger money

Back to Solyndra for a second. That company’s technology was an attempt to radically improve large-scale rooftop solar installations, appealing to major customers who could undertake huge projects.

SolarCity

Regardless of how you feel about the bankruptcy, the tech offered a meaningful opportunity to change the game in commercial solar, providing an alternative to old-fashioned, cheap solar panels that could flood the US market from places like China.

It’s not clear that SolarCity’s pre-Tesla-acquisition move into commercial was achieving the company’s goals; its was growing, but not as nearly the same rate as residential.

Musk’s logic

Tesla’s thinking is that a truly differentiated residential solar roof could turbocharge installations, improve SolarCity’s entire business, and lend some support to Tesla’s energy storage products. A gorgeous home solar roof is also better marketing than a commercial installation.

But selling the new solar roof could easily parallel the adoption that Tesla has seen with its vehicles: they’re expensive, and they are selling, but they aren’t meaningfully displacing gas-powered cars and trucks. The solar roof could move the needle, and there are obviously a lot more homes in the US than there are commercial rooftops. But my sense is that as good as Musk is at selling cars, he’s going to find that selling pricey roofs is a lot more difficult.

Scientists discovered an underwater lake of death called the 'Jacuzzi of Despair'

In 2015, a team of scientists and engineers with the Ocean Exploration Trust were exploring the seafloor in the gulf of Mexico when they came across a larger brine pool, which looks like underwater lake.

The team was so curious that it sent a vehicle into the pool's depths only to discover that it's deeper than they expected. In fact, they lowered a line 62 feet below its "surface" but never hit bottom.

The footage was initially taken live. You can watch more live video from the ocean floor here. And for live dive updates, follow the team's social media on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

15 classic movies you can stream on the new Netflix competitor for film fans

The Player Fine Line Features

If you’ve been waiting patiently for hard-to-find movies from Stanley Kubrick and Akira Kurosawa to finally be available to stream, wait no more — FilmStruck is here!

The new streaming service developed and managed by the cinephiles at Turner Classic Movies, FilmStruck will provide hundreds of classic Hollywood, indie, foreign, and cult hits on a subscription basis. Available titles include Charlie Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush,” Kurosawa’s “Rashomon,” Kubrick’s “The Killing,” and Robert Altman’s “The Player.”

It will also provide the largest streaming selection of Criterion Collection titles (and the company’s incredible special features).

FilmStruck just went live Tuesday. Prices vary: $6.99 per month for FilmStruck; $10.99 per month for FilmStruck and Criterion Channel; $99 per year for the annual subscription to FilmStruck and Criterion Channel.

Here are 15 classic titles that you can stream right now (with the FilmStruck/Criterion Channel package):

1. “The 400 Blows” (1959)

Director François Truffaut’s semi-autobiographical look at his childhood in Paris is a pillar of the French New Wave, which still inspires filmmakers to this day. In it, then-unknown 14-year-old Jean-Pierre Léaud plays Antoine Doinel, a misfit running around Paris whose troublemaking often goes unpunished.

2. “Blood Simple” (1984)

The directorial debut of the Coen brothers (“The Big Lebowski,” “No Country for Old Men”) is a gritty neo-noir that showcases many of the hallmarks the duo would master in their movies to come. From the camerawork to the writing, there’s a lot to love about this movie.

3. “Breathless” (1960)

A year after the release of “The 400 Blows,” Jean-Luc Godard would add to the French New Wave with his classic debut. Following a thief who is wanted by the police and the American girl he tries to run away to Italy with, the movie’s use of dramatic jump cuts was revolutionary for the 1960s.
